Get You Started

Even if your data is on the shelf?
- How much food intake data have you collected because “it was a good idea at the time” and that data is now sitting in boxes or filing cabinets waiting for an opportunity? Well, that opportunity is here! Hire a (or a few) students this summer and get that data into a computer. And, when I say a computer, I mean into CANDAT. Once the data is in Candat it is in a safe place and the computer can now do the work for you.
- Without re-entry of data you can choose different sets of nutrients to look at by individual foods, by food groups, by meals, by days… you have many options.
- Is sodium prevalent in your population? more so in children than adolescents and adults? a simple computer pass at your data, import into your statistical system and you have your answer right away.
- …and you have to get started!
-
Even if you are in the middle of a food intake study?
- What are you going to do with all that data? It seems insignificant now but the best place to put that data is in a computer structure where you can access it, create variables and do quick analyses to see immediate results.
- Even if you want to see that data organized in different ways… you do not have to touch the data. Define the meals, food groups, days in the computer and redo the analysis to see immediate results.
- It’s easy…
- …and you have to get started!
-
Even if you or someone you know may be doing food intake studies, sometime soon now…
- Wouldn’t it be nice to know that tools exist which can make that work easy and fun?
- Take a few minutes, try the trial versions at no cost or risk and proceed with confidence.
- The answers to your food intake questions may be just around the corner.
- …and you have to get started!

Especially if you are teaching a course on food intake research
- CANDAT the software provides the modules that are needed to do food research
- CANDAT is organized in a logical way that takes you step by step through food research
- Each task in CANDAT reflects the real world requirements of food research
- CANDAT is a curriculum in itself, whether you have a research need or not, it is a great teaching tool
- CANDAT can be set up in a computer lab and all students can have their own data area.

Get that data into CANDAT!
Since he has worked with a number of academics in nutrition, he understands research and the special needs researchers have. My research group had a challenging task a few years ago which involved adapting an American Food Frequency questionnaire for Canadian use and adding data on dietary nitrates. This was a very complex and time consuming task, and Gaetan was an active participant in the research process. When we were under time pressures to complete the analysis, Gaetan committed time and was able to get us the data when we needed it.

Unlimited Nutrients and Foods
-
3 layered food files, “Master” – “Institute” – “Users (unlimited)”
-
Recent Canadian and USA food files (CNF 2010 & USDA SR25)
CANDAT is superior to other nutrient analysis programs because it is designed to accommodate the diverse needs of researchers. Being able to handle food recalls and records and food frequency questionnaires in the same program, to create user files of special food items not included in the CNF and to easily import files into statistical analysis packages makes it unique in Canada. Most of all, having a support person who has extensive experience with nutrition researchers makes CANDAT an easy choice for me. I have been using CANDAT for two years. Generally to say, it is surely an effective dietary intake assessment tool. It is friendly-used for step-by-step operations. Especially CANDAT divided the food files into 3 levels of master, institute and user, which is really convenient to edit food items to make it suitable for various projects. The table and cateogry definition could be used to create new food groups based on actal needs. The entry of nutrition data is easily performed for different days and could be separated according to meal and food codes. The validation process is also nicely considered. When all the entry and validation is done, nutrients values could be automatically calculated and exported to Excel for further statistical analysis in SAS, SPSS, STATA etc. And it is regularly upgraded to include the latest version of Canadian Food File and USDA food file. Now the 64 bit version is released which makes it even more convenient and compatible in the new Windows operation systems.

We use CANDAT because it is the best software giving access to the Canadian Nutrient File (CNF) that we have been able to find. It allows us to structure our data to provide the results that we need. For example, we have made consistent use of the food grouping capability that provides us with nutrients from these food groups so we can write manuscripts pertaining not only to the nutrients but also the food sources in the Canadian population.

Recently, we requested a new feature which would enable users to view the food description when reviewing data entry and Gaetan was able to do this within a few days. I would highly recommend CANDAT to any nutrition researcher.

I keep coming back to CANDAT for two reasons: the support with CANDAT is superb. I have emailed Gaetan and received a phone call within minutes. He “knows his stuff” and can pinpoint and resolve any problems or challenges quickly.
…He goes beyond a technical role, and sometimes poses questions which I don’t think of, preventing problems before they happen.

…In addition, the customer and technical service at Godin London Incorporated is time efficient. Gaetan is always quick for response and provide helpful solutions.
